Lee County, FL — At least one person has died after a sedan crashed into a ditch and struck a natural gas line along US-41 just south of Alico Road in Fort Myers.
San Carlos Park Fire and Lee County EMS crews responded to the incident at 8:10 AM Sunday morning.
The Florida Highway Patrol says the sedan was traveling northbound on US-41 when it traveled off the road, over the outside shoulder, and entered a ditch before crashing into a natural gas line.
At least 15 seconds after the initial collision, the natural gas line erupted and the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames, according to witness video.
The vehicle was burning for over two hours before the natural gas supply was shut down by TECO and firefighters were able to extinguish the fire.
Fire & EMS radio communications indicate that two people were pronounced dead inside of the vehicle, but at this time, FHP has only confirmed one fatality.
Radio communications also indicated that there may have possibly been a third victim in the back seat, but this is unconfirmed and paramedics did not pronounce any additional victims deceased.
FHP is working alongside the Lee County Medical Examiner to determine the identity of the driver and any other potential victims involved.
All northbound lanes of US-41 are shut down at Michael G. Rippe Pkwy.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating.
