UPDATE | 11.19.24
4:35 PM — The Florida Highway Patrol confirms one man is dead and another has been arrested in connection with this incident.
Troopers say Darian Camacho, 37, of Miami was driving a minivan northbound on I-75 near the 72 mile marker in the inside lane when he says he fell asleep and drifted onto the inside shoulder.
Camacho’s vehicle then collided with multiple cable barrier support beams, partially slid under the cable barrier and struck a construction sign, lodging it in the front of the vehicle.
Camacho’s vehicle then struck a worker, a 39-year-old man, who was laying sod for a private company on the northbound inside shoulder.
Troopers say the worker was projected forward and came to rest in the northbound inside lane where he was pronounced deceased.
Troopers confirm a second worker sustained a minor injury after being struck by debris from the crash but they were not transported to the hospital.
Camacho was placed under arrest for driving without a license causing death, a felony, and attaching a license plate not assigned to a vehicle, a misdemeanor and booked into the Collier County Jail.
