UPDATE | 09.29.24
10:57 AM — The Florida Highway Patrol has confirmed that a 69-year-old Naples man has died after his car crashed into a canal at 276 12th Avenue NE in Naples.
At around 8:03 PM, troopers say the sedan was traveling eastbound on 12th Ave NE, approaching the dead end, at a "high rate of speed".
The sedan then traveled off the roadway, launched over the canal, and crashed into the east-side canal embankment.
The force of the initial collision caused the vehicle to land in the water, where it then submerged with the driver inside.
The man was reportedly underwater for around 10 minutes before being transported to NCH Northeast Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The FHP continues to investigate this crash.
