UPDATE | 09.07.24
10:44 AM — The Florida Highway Patrol has confirmed that a 17-year-old teen is dead after a crash involving multiple vehicles at SR-82 and Harcourt Avenue.
A sedan, driven by a 17-year-old male from Fort Denaud, was reportedly street racing at a high rate of speed with unidentified "Vehicle 2" traveling westbound on State Road 82, approaching Harcourt Ave.
An SUV driven by an 18-year-old Fort Myers woman, and sedan driven by a 44-year-old North Fort Myers man, were both traveling westbound on State Road 82, approaching Harcourt Avenue, ahead of the vehicles reportedly street racing.
The sedan that was traveling at a high rate of speed then collided with the SUV, forcing it to crash into the second sedan.
Following the initial collision, the racing sedan veered into the right curbed shoulder, collided with a street sign, and launched into the tree line.
The 17-year-old male passenger of the sedan was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead on scene.
The driver of the sedan, alongside two other passengers who have yet to be identified, sustained serious injuries and were transported to area hospitals.
FHP states that the second vehicle involved in the street race failed to remain on the scene and fled the crash. The vehicle is white in color.
The crash remains under investigation.
FHP requests anyone with information on the crash to contact them by dialing *FHP or by notifying SWFL Crimestoppers.
