Lee County, FL — One person has died and an officer has been injured after a vehicle plunged into a canal following a two vehicle crash at Burnt Store Road N and NW 14th Terrace in Cape Coral.
Cape Coral Fire and Lee County EMS crews responded to the incident at 10:29 PM Wednesday night.
An occupant of the submerged vehicle was removed by divers and pronounced dead at the scene at 11:10 PM.
A CCPD officer sustained minor injuries during dive operations and was transported to an area hospital.
Three other people involved in the crash did not sustain injuries and refused medical care.
A Level 1 Mass Casualty Incident was declared due to the number of patients involved.
Officers could also be seen performing a Field Sobriety Test on a driver involved in the crash. EMS was later dispatched to the scene after officers requested a blood draw to be performed.
All southbound lanes of Burnt Store Rd N are blocked at Gulfstream Pkwy.
The Cape Coral Police Department is investigating.
